Rui Sousa Silva is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts, a researcher, and the Scientific Coordinator of the Center for Linguistics (CLUP) at the University of Porto, where he has conducted research in Forensic Linguistics. His focus areas include authorship analysis, plagiarism analysis and detection, and cybercrime. He is also a member of the Ethics Committee at FLUP and the Scientific Committee of the Master’s in Translation and Linguistic Services, serving as the Coordinator of the Specialization Course in Forensic Linguistics.
He holds a degree in Translation and a Master’s in Translation and Terminology from FLUP, and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Aston University (Birmingham, United Kingdom). His doctoral thesis in Forensic Linguistics, titled “Detecting Plagiarism in the Forensic Linguistics Turn,” investigated transcultural attitudes towards plagiarism and proposed a translingual approach to plagiarism detection. Rui Sousa-Silva is the author and co-author of several articles on (computational) authorship analysis, plagiarism detection, and the analysis of cybercriminal communications.
Additionally, he serves as the co-editor of the bilingual international journal Language and Law – Linguagem e Direito and the 2nd edition of ‘The Routledge Handbook of Forensic Linguistics,’ published by Routledge. He coordinates the Computational Linguistics working group of the COST Action LITHME – Language in the Human-Machine Era.
